Where is Tuvalu located? The island state of Tuvalu is located in the Pacific Ocean. Before gaining independence from Britain in 1987, the archipelago was called the Ellice Islands. Only 11,500 people live on the nine islands of Tuvalu, as many as in a larger village or a small town here. Only in Vatican State do fewer people live. However, the population density is quite high, because the land mass is very small.
