Bordering Countries of Haiti

The Haiti-Dominican Republic border runs for 360 kilometers from east to west along La Altagracia Province, El Seibo Province and Independencia Province. This boundary was established in 1936 following an agreement between both countries. The Haiti-Jamaica border runs for 10 kilometers from north to south along Trelawny Parish and Westmoreland Parish. This boundary was established as part of a peace treaty signed between both countries in 1934 which ended years of conflict in this region.
Additionally, Haiti has a maritime border with Cuba which runs for 2,800 kilometers along the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. This boundary was established as part of a maritime agreement signed between both countries in 1973 which recognized the exclusive economic zones of each nation within their respective territorial waters.

People in Haiti
11 million people live in Haiti. Most Haitians are of African descent. There are few whites. 60 to 95 percent are counted among the blacks, 5 to 35 percent among people with both black and white ancestors (mulattos). You don’t know the exact numbers. The distinction between blacks and mulattos has played a role time and again in Haiti’s history. The term “mulatto” is used reluctantly in German because it is considered degrading.
Many Haitians have left their country and emigrated. Most live in the USA and the Dominican Republic, and there are many Haitians in Cuba, Canada and the Bahamas. They are fleeing poverty in their country.

Languages in Haiti
Two languages are officially spoken in Haiti: French and Haitian. French was adopted from the colonial era. Haitian is a French-based creole language. Almost all Haitians speak it. It came about because the slaves from different areas in Africa could not communicate. They used the French of the colonial masters, but adapted it to their own pronunciation and incorporated words from their own language.
Religions in Haiti
The majority of the population is Catholic. Their share is estimated at 80 percent. The number of Protestants has been increasing for several years while that of Catholics is falling. Many believers in Haiti also practice voodoo rituals.
