Hawaii is a volcanic archipelago made up of 137 different islands, such as Oahu, Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island. See all cities in Hawaii. Hawaii is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and has eight inhabited islands with a wealth of culture and history. Because of the high waves, Hawaii is a paradise for windsurfers, kitesurfers, but also for snorkeling and diving. The landscape is very varied, from beautiful sandy beaches to desert areas. In Hawaii, more than 90% of the flora and fauna cannot be found in other parts of the world.
Geography
Hawaii consists largely of volcanoes, high mountains and rugged sea cliffs. The highest point in Hawaii is the 4,205-foot Mauna Kea. Oahu with the capital Honolulu is the most important and densely populated island but Hawaii is the largest. Volcanic eruptions and tsunamis regularly occur in Hawaii. The islands are home to many volcanoes, such as the dormant volcano Haleakala and the active volcano Kilauea. The Archipelago is located 3,900 kilometers from Los Angels and 4,300 kilometers from Alaska.
History
The original inhabitants of Hawaii were the Polynesians from Marquesas Islands. Officially, James Cook was the discoverer of Hawaii in 1778 during his third world tour. He named the islands Sandwich Islands, named after the First Lord of the Admiralty, Lord Sandwich.
In 1810, King Kamehameha I violently united all the islands into the Kingdom of Hawaii. Only the island of Kauai voluntarily joined the kingdom. Around 1820, the Protestant missionaries established schools where the Hawaiian language was established. Also during this time the American settlers arrived in Hawaii.
In 1883, American sugar planters staged a coup in which Queen Liliuokalani of Hawaii was arrested. The coup accelerated the annexation of Hawaii and became an American Territory that same year.
On December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japanese warplanes during World War II. Therefore, many Japanese Americans joined the army and established the 442nd Infantry Regiment and the 100th Infantry Battalion. One in three infantrymen would not survive the war.
On August 21, 1959, Hawaii officially joined the United States as the 50th state.

Just like in many other states, Defense is also an important employer in Hawaii. The naval base Hickam Air Force Base is located on Pearl Harbor due to its strategic location. The Marine Corps Base Hawaii is located on Kailua. Hawaii also has a number of smaller military training areas.
